DISTRIBUTION

The Atlantic bonito occurs in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Pacific bonito is restricted to the eastern Pacific Ocean. The striped bonito occur in scattered populations throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Australian bonito occurs only off the eastern coast of Australia.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The Atlantic bonito has stripes on the back, not the belly. The first dorsal fin has 20-23 spines. The second dorsal fin consists of 13-18 rays followed by 7-10 finlets. The anal fin consists of 14-17 rays followed by 6-8 finlets. The caudal peduncle has a lateral keel on either side. The Pacific bonito has 8-27 gill rakers on the first arch and the first dorsal fin has 17-19 spines. The Australian bonito has stripes on the belly as well as on the back, but the other Pacific bonitos lack any sort of stripes, lines, or spots on the belly.

GENERAL

Fishing methods include trolling at or near the surface; also casting, jigging, or live bait fishing with small pelagic fishes, squid, cut or strip baits, or with any of a variety of small artificial lures.The flesh is light coloured and of good quality.
