DISTRIBUTION

Occurs worldwide in tropical and warm temperate seas, including the Mediterranean. Also found seasonally in colder zones (New England, South Brazil, northern Gulf of Mexico).

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Albacore can be recognised by their very long pectoral fins, usually one third or more of the fork length, and extending past the insertion of the anal fin. Body depth is greatest at or slightly before the level of the second dorsal fin; and the ventral surface of the liver is striated. Albacore have a dark yellow first dorsal fin, pale yellow second dorsal and anal fins, and a white posterior margin to their caudal fin.

GENERAL

The albacore is considered by anglers to be an excellent light-tackle game fish. Fishing methods include trolling with feathered jigs, spoons and other lures; live and whole bait fishing with mullet, sauries, squid, herring, anchovies, sardines and other small fishes.Albacore are a premium canning species. They are esteemed for their white, dry flesh and are often referred to as 'chicken of the sea'.
